The first thing to do when shopping for a CORDLESS PHONE is to decide what type of cordless phone best meets your needs. Most cordless phones use one of the following frequencies: 900MHz, 2.4GHz, or 5.8 GHz. The frequency that the cordless phone operates on plays an important role in your selection. Cordless phones that operate using 900mhz have been around the longest and suffer from the most interference and static (from baby monitors and microwave ovens). 2.4GHz phones were suppose to offer better reception than the 900MHz phones by operating on a frequency with less interference. The problem here is the popularity of home wireless computer networks and stereo headphones that use the 2.4GHz frequency. The latest frequency used by cordless phones is 5.8GHz. The biggest advantage of the 5.8GHz phone is that it will not interfere with you home wireless computer network.

Another important choice is analog, digital, or digital spread spectrum (DSS). The least expensive is analog but it is also the least secure. Conversations can be heard by anyone with a channel-scanner. Digital phones are more secure than analog phones because the sound is digitized. One complaint that some people report is a slight echo when using some models. DSS phones also use a digital signal and are the most expensive. Because your voice is scrambled across frequencies, it is also the most secure. Another plus is that spread spectrum takes advantage of multiple channels by detecting the one with least amount of static.
